On Old U.S.
13 on the outskirts of Pocomoke State Forest lies the estate of
Cellar House. This seventeenth century mansion is unique in that
it lies on a bluff overlooking the Pocomoke River at one of the
few sites that swampland does not border the shoreline. It was for
this reason that a number of pirates used the old home as a stash
site for numerous chests of treasure.
A
secret passageway runs from the cellar of the mansion and emerges
out under the bluff, right at the Pocomoke River. Pirates used this
hidden tunnel as an entrance and exit, that could not be easily
discovered by authorities in the event of a confrontation.
It
is believed that a number of sea chests were buried somewhere along
the bluff and were never recovered because the pirate crew was lost
during a sea battle with Colonial authorities. Who the pirates were
led by is somewhat of a mystery but the possibility of a lost treasure
is distinct and the hoard would be of considerable value.
